Dear Board Members, Teachers, Staff, and Alumni,
Chinese New Year is around the corner! May I wish you all a joyful and prosperous Year of the Rabbit!
Since I took up the Chairman of the Chung Chi College Board of Trustees in August 2021, I have been receiving enormous support from board members, staff and alumni, driving the College forward to the highest excellence. In conformity with the spirit of the College motto “In Pursuit of Excellence”, three aspects of qualities - “Mastery of Both Academics and Athletics”, “Cultivation of Morality and Service Spirit”, and “Spirituality Enhancement” have been proposed as the expected attributes for our college students. In October last year, I had the honour to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Chung Chi College with all CC-ers, while witnessing the completion of the Student Development Complex, of which $250 million of the total construction cost was contributed and raised by the College. I felt heartened and delighted since the Complex, which took five years to build, has solved the long-term problem of indoor activity space shortage within the College campus.
At the 70th Anniversary Celebration Banquet last year, I announced a major campus development plan, tentatively named "Project E", which is initiated to redevelop the staff quarters Block E adjacent to the University Station, into a twin-block building. The high block will be a student hostel with about 300 places, while the low block includes replacement staff quarters (17,000 square feet), an alumni activity centre (2,200 square feet) linking to a sky garden, Digital Culture and Art Creativity Centre (3,500 square feet), among others. This project will not just improve the facilities of the College, but also promote and pass on the spirit of Chung Chi, and bring together the College students, staff, and alumni.
An architect has been appointed to design the building, and tenders for construction will be invited in the fourth quarter of this year. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, at the 75th anniversary of the College. The revised construction cost is estimated at $550 million. After netting out the government subsidy of $200 million for the partial construction cost of the student hostel, the $100 million from the matching fund and the $70 million from the staff quarters fund agreed by the Finance Committee of the College Board, still, a total of $180 million need to be raised from CC-ers and the community. The fundraising campaign of this project was kicked off at the 70th Anniversary Celebration Banquet with four trustees pledging $2.8 million, while the College will hold a series of publicity and fundraising activities in the coming four years to achieve the fundraising target of $180 million. Apart from giving your active participation and generous support, you are encouraged to share our enthusiasm and educational vision with your family and friends to solicit their support for Chung Chi and our Project E.
Project E is one of the largest development projects of the College since its establishment 70 years ago and will be an important milestone for the College’s development. I firmly believe that with the full support and determination of CC-ers, we will overcome all difficulties ahead and achieve our target. For the introduction, fundraising plan, and acknowledgement of the project, please refer to the brochure. Apart from participating in various fundraising activities, we welcome everyone to donate online anytime. Norman CHAN
